Amsterdam Queensday
History
On 31 august 1885, the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina,
was the first celebration of Princessday. Later on
this became Queensday. Because Queensday also was
the last day of the schoolholiday, soon this day
became a feast day for the children.
On 31 august 1902 became Queensday really a feast for
all people. The population celebrated that day the
queen Wilhelimina was recovered from a serious disease.
More and more people took the day off and the feast
became a national feast. In honour of the old queen
and because the current queens birthday is in the winter
Queensday’s still celebrated on April 30th.
